On October 30,1938, the night before Halloween, Orson Welles brought shock to people all over the country through a broadcast. He talked about fake aliens in New Mills, New Jersey. He did this because he wanted more people to listen to his broadcasts. His broadcast was meant to seem realistic, and many people did not know it was fake. Orson Welles recklessly endangered people through his broadcast by causing chaos across the country. The original broadcast seemed realistic. First, the introduction and the weather report seemed realistic because it sounded similar to how it did during that time. The broadcast had static coming through the radio. First, in the broadcast, Orson Welles stated that Mars exploded. This is not true because if Mars exploded, then the planets rotation would be changed. This means Earth could freeze, and the people would die. Next, Orson Welles said that there was a meteor strike. He and his team were going to investigate the meteor strike. This was fictional because there was never a strike. Lastly, Orson Welles told his listeners that there was an alien invasion. This was fictional because aliens did not invade the United States, Orson Welles gave listeners fake information during his broadcast. The listeners became frightened and began to panic. They barricaded their homes, and brought out their guns to shoot anyone or anything that was suspicious. During the interview, Orson Welles appeared to be sorry. He apologized many times during the interview. In the video, he had a serious look on his face; he was not laughing or joking. Orson Welles seemed to not realize that he frightened so many people. Orson Welles did a few things to make people believe he was not sorry. First, he was fidgeting with his hands. This made people think he was uncomfortable and not sorry because he was wrong. Also, Orson Welles kept shaking his head no during the interview, which made it seem like he was not
