At 7:55 A.M. on December 7, 1941, Japan performed a surprise attack on the United States at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. It was one of the deadliest attacks in American history. The assault lasted less than two hours, but still, almost 20 ships and over 300 aircraft were either damaged or destroyed in the attack, and more than 3,500 men were killed. Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor targeted the U.S. Navy to prevent them from interfering with Japan’s plans to take over the Pacific area. Almost half of the casualties occurred on the battleship USS Arizona, which was hit by Japanese bombers four times. This attack is what caused the U.S. to enter the war against the Axis Powers. Pacific Fleet at Hawaii included Japan's six largest aircraft carriers. Japan’s plan was made much easier with President Roosevelt's decision to relocate the U.S. Pacific Fleet from California to Hawaii. The destruction of the American Pacific Fleet would give Japan time to seize the Philippines, Malaya, British Borneo, Burma and the Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia), and gain access to the oil, minerals, rubber and other resources that Japan needed to continue the war. Some bombers attacked ships that were still in dry dock. Others targeted the Nevada, which was trying to get to sea. Neither wave could find the aircraft carriers, which were all at sea. Even though fuel storage tanks, maintenance areas, destroyers and submarines were not targeted, Japan still ruined the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s battleship force, making sure that the U.S. did not interfere with their plans. Washington received a war threat from Japan before the attacks, but it was too late to warn the Navy. In just 2 hours, Japan killed 2,008 in the U.S. Navy, 218 in the U.S. Army, 109 Marines, and 68 civilians. They also wounded 710 in the Navy, 364 in the Army, 69 Marines, and 35 civilians. Japan damaged 159 aircraft, and destroyed 169. They damaged 16 ships, but only destroyed 2 battleships and 1
