Unlike World War I which was brought up by mutual alliances, lands, militarism or nationalism conflicts; World War II was a continuity of colonial and financial losses elicited by World War I. World War II (WWII) spread from 1939 until 1945. It was the longest war in history and included the greatest powers. At the end of World War I (WWI), great monarchies of Europe such as Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary and Turkey have fallen and were tasked of paying for the repairs. The Austrian Chancellor, Dollfuss, who opposed this idea, prohibited the Austrian Nazi party. In July 1934, he was assassinated. On the night of June 29-30, 1934, Hitler eliminated his main opponents or competitors within his own party: General Von Schleicher, former Chancellor, and Ernst Röhm. This event, called the "night of the long knives", created a climate of terror against opponents of the regime and was well received by the more conservative circles as well as some industrial magnates. In August 1934, after the death of the German WWI military commander, self-proclaimed President and Führer, Paul von Hindenburg, Hitler strengthened its power by abolishing the Weimar Constitution, ending the "Führer" (German term meaning "guide") of the German people. In March 1935, Germany officially announced its rearmament: its army reached four hundred thousand soldiers, against a maximum of a hundred thousand allowed in the Treaty of Versailles, and an extensive program designed to build air and naval forces and missiles. In April, the Stresa Conference gathers France, Great Britain and Italy, who were against the evolution of things in Germany. However, no real and effective sanctions were taken against Germany. Tensions in Europe, but also in the Pacific, and the League of Nations seemed helpless. At the same time, the British Prime Minister advocated a policy of appeasement, motivated by the memory of WWI, increased the proportion of revenue allocated to the military budget, and wished to develop its sphere of influence. Hitler enjoyed this policy also during the Anschluss in 1938, which was the annexation of Austria by Germany, annexation approved by the Munich agreements, signed by France, Germany, Great Britain, and Italy, represented respectively by Edouard Daladier, Neville Chamberlain, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. The declaration of war on August 23rd, 1939 until December 1941 by the Japanese leadership pursued two courses: they tried to get the oil embargo lifted on terms that would still let them have any territory they wanted.
