The exact cause and nature of the fall of the Western Roman Empire is a highly debated topic amongst historians. Going with the traditional viewpoint, the empire was facing constant, external pressure from the Germanic barbarians, which in turn forced the Roman government into economic freefall trying to defend their vast territories from invasion. Trying to both maintain their military and salvage their economy, the empire started enlisting Germanic warriors into their military without properly assimilating them into Rome beforehand.
