Hurricane Katrina was a massive category five storm. Katrina hit southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi and proceeded from August 23 through August 31, 2005. Hurricane Katrina was arguably the worst natural disaster in history to date. The cause of the major flooding was because the levees failed and the outcome varied from housing damage to political arguments. To began, Hurricane Katrina became a Category 5 storm on August 28, 2005 as the winds struck at 175 mph. The major impact of Hurricane Katrina's flooding was due to the fact that the levees had broken and New Orleans was below sea level. According to the article called ‘’Facts for Features: Katrina Impact’’, ‘’The levees protecting New Orleans failed in August 2005, approximately 80 percent of the city was flooded’’ (Pyler). All of the levees had breached before 10a.m on the morning of August 29, 2005. There are many causes of Hurricane Katrina from the weather to how the state was established. …show more content…

Approximately 135 billion dollars was needed after the total damages. According to the article called ‘’HURRICANE KATRINA’’ ‘’In all, Hurricane Katrina killed nearly 2,000 people and affected some 90,000 square miles of the United States. ‘’(author unknown). Around 70% (134,000) of all housing units that were occupied had damage done to them. The population of New Orleans dropped to almost half of the people. Drowning was one of the biggest causes of death. Almost 40% of the people had died from the flooding and 25% from injury. The amount of deaths had a big impact on the government and they started to argue and blame each other which turned into a political fallout.
