The Vietnam War was one of the deadliest and long lasting wars of the 20th century; lasting 20 years from November 1955, ending in April 1975. Initially, the Vietnamese fought for independence from France and won in 1954 though the country was split into two ideologies, the communist North and the republican South. North Vietnam supported the Viet Cong insurgencies in the South resulting in the start of the war. The United States, Australia and other nations were directly involved in the fighting to defend South Vietnam from the Viet Cong and North Vietnam. The war eventually came to a stalemate until the North Vietnamese launched a surprise attack known as the Tet Offensive which proved to be the pivotal and decisive moment of the war.
The Vietnam War, which lasted from 1955 to 1975, was one of the most divisive and controversial conflicts in American history. It was a military conflict between the Communist North Vietnam, and South Vietnam, with the United States and other Western powers supporting the Southern Vietnamese. The war was fought in the context of the Cold War because the United States feared that Communism would spread throughout Southeast Asia if North Vietnam managed to take control of the entire country. The war had such a profound impact on American society, and still remains a subject of intense debate and analysis today. After World War I, Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, expressed many grievances against the French colonialists.
The United States was involved in the Vietnam War in the 1960s in order to support South Vietnam’s fight for an economic and cultural ties to the West. On the other hand, North Vietnam supported the ideas of a communist economy. However, the United States’s involvement in the war caused a million of dollars and lives lost, lost of faith towards the country’s government, and divided the nation instead of uniting as one. More than three million people in the war died, and out of those three million, 58,000 were Americans. The Americans and the people in South Vietnam had fought for their beliefs of a modern Westernized country while North Vietnam had fought for a communist economy.
The Vietnam War was a battle between the United States of America and the mid-eastern country of Vietnam. What commenced the Vietnam War was Vietnam had to make a decision on what type of government they wanted to follow. They could choose between being a Communist government, which meant everyone contributed to society and no money was needed, or they could be Democratic, meaning the people of Vietnam would have to work to obtain money in which they could spend it on their personal needs. Vietnam ultimately chose to have a Communist government; however, the United States disapproved of this idea. Therefore, U.S.A. decides to send troops to Vietnam, fighting to get rid of Communism in Vietnam for a better future.
The Vietnam War started when French invaded Vietnamese territory and took it as their colony in 1887. Later in 1954, Vietnam was officially split into North(communist) and South(capitalist) Vietnam. The Viet Minh was the communist group who wanted to declare independence from France. The U.S did not want communism to be spread and that was the reason why they joined the war and supported the South. For the United States, a communist Vietnam meant the spread of the Soviet Union influence abroad the Asia’s territory (domino theory).

Eisenhower and ending, over 20 years later, at the beginning of Gerald Ford’s presidency. It was a conflict that pitted communist North Vietnam and its allies in the South, who were known as the Viet Cong, against South Vietnam and its primary ally, the United States of America. At the beginning of the Vietnam War, the United States had already been engaged in the Cold War, fighting the Soviet Union, for seven years. Despite this, the United States still assisted South Vietnam.

The following year, Diem decided to not hold the Geneva-mandated reunification elections, as he believed the Communists would win the election. Therefore, Diem, along with help from the CIA(Central Intelligence Agency), ousted former Emperor Bao Dai, and created the Republic of Vietnam(RVN). The RVN never became the full structure of democracy the US had hoped, but they still stuck with Diem, and he remained in power. As the early 1960’s came around, the US increased involvement and funding into helping Diem fight and the South fight the civil war against the Viet Cong, under the JFK administration.

Through half of the century, Vietnam was occupied by France and Japan, but in 1945 Viet Minh, the national revolutionary force of Indochina, claimed control of Vietnam, this caused Japan and France to be in a different area. After President Franklin Roosevelt died in 1945, President Harry Truman he enacted the policy of containment, this caused the French to watch the democratic process, though this caused the First Indochina War. In 1945, Ho Chi Mihn declared Vietnam's independence.
The Vietnam War was a war the United States should have never been involved in. The “Domino Theory” was a direct cause of the war. The war resulted in much death; innocent civilians and young Americans were killed. The Vietnam war also resulted in rioting, distrust for the United States government, and the loss of many lives. 58,000 Americans were killed and 300,000 were wounded.
Ho Chi Minh, Former Prime Minister of Vietnam, once said: “You can kill ten of my men for every one I kill of yours. But even at those odds, you will lose and I will win” (Vietnam War Quotations).
