One cause for the events and actions that led to the economic conditions that caused the Great Depression was the stock market crash of 1929. In the years leading up to the crash, there was a speculative bubble in the stock market, with investors buying stocks on margin with borrowed money, driving up prices to unsustainable levels. When investors began to realize that the market was overvalued and began selling their stocks, prices plummeted, causing a chain reaction of panic selling and a sharp decline in the value of the stock market.
