Schizophrenia is a long term mental health disorder that is most common in adolescence or young adulthood. Schizophrenia effects the normal function of the brain, it interferes with a person’s ability to think, feel and act which could be in the workplace or a school environment. (SANE Australia, 2017). With time people may find their symptoms improve and are manageable, for many people though it is a prolonged illness which can lead to many years of distress. People are lucky enough to recover completely though. (SANE Australia, 2017). There are no known causes but genetics and environment play a part. Traumatic, stressful and violent events in your life can also play a role in developing schizophrenia. If say another family member has another disorder similar, like delusional disorder you should be aware because you may be at a higher risk. (Mind Health Connect, 2016). Symptoms of schizophrenia can vary from person to person and can be very different. Experts believe that schizophrenia may be a group of conditions rather than a single disorder which causes an altered experience of reality and affects people thought, perception and behaviour (Mind Health Connect, 2016). There are three main symptoms of the illness known as – Positive, Negative and Disorganised Symptoms. As each treatment with vary from each individual. Early treatment as always best because you are able to get control because serious damage has happened and there are early intervention programs. Medication is the main and most common treatment for schizophrenia, antipsychotic medications can reduce the main symptoms like hallucinations and delusions. Psychological treatment can help someone better understand and manage their symptoms and learn new ways to cope. Community support can be very beneficial, having a stable home, supportive friends and family and meaningful activities. At some stages a person may need hospital treatment, this is when symptoms become out of control or the person is not able to manage at home. Although most people with schizophrenia are not violent, severe symptoms can cause some people to have suicidal thoughts or harm others (usually this is a result from paranoia).
