What is crime? According to the Oxford Dictionary, crime is “an action or omission which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law.” There are many ways people can commit criminal offenses, but in The Bahamas the types of crimes that are common are: homicide, assault and injuries, violence in the home, sexual violence, violence at schools, robbery, property crime and gang violence. Out of the listed common crimes, gang related violence is most prevalent in The Bahamas. Gang violence can consist off or is linked to many of the other crimes mentioned above. Criminals can be persons from all walks of life, from a man on the street to a politician in office. The reason a person resort to crime can vary, but some of the greatest influences are; family structure, revenge, and environment.
In The Bahamas, the extended family was once the dominated family structure. However, over the years this structure has diminished and the rise of the single parent family has taken dominion. Due to dramatic changes in the family structure, having only a woman in the household with no father or father figure can lead to problematic children. With no masculine reinforcement of rules and regulations within the household the adolescents enter into society with the same frame and mind towards rules and regulation within the community.
