What events led to the point of the Declaration of Independence? The biggest thing that led to the Declaration of Independence was the French and Indian war also known as the seven-year war. This war was fought between 1756-1763. The British won the battle of the plains of Abraham in 1759 meaning they now occupied Quebec. The following year the British gained control of Montreal and the French and Indian war was pretty much over besides of the signing of the treaty of Paris. On February 10th 1763 the treaty of Paris was signed officially ending the war even though the battles already ended. Thus, now Britain gained control of the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. The Americans no longer needed the English’s help against the French, but since the war was so expensive Britain decides to tax the Americans to pay the debt off. The Sugar act was to tax merchants of six pence per gallon on the importation of foreign molasses, and was a hidden cost(tax) in fact. The next year 1765 March 22nd the British parliament passed the Stamp Act. This was a new tax that was imposed for all American colonies to pay tax on every printed piece of paper. This act, however, was a direct tax against the colonist that led to a major cause of the revolution: taxation without representation. This makes the Americans very angry.
