In the 1930s more than 15 million American had no jobs. That is more than 20 percent of the U.S population at that time. The United States was in a bad situation called The Great Depression. There was a lot of poverty since the stock market crashed in 1929. Americans lost their money/savings.
The context of the great depression is world war 1 the great world was fought in europe leaving the us economy untouched this allowed the u.s to become a trading giant as they began to mass produce everything. After evaluating and weighing the evidence installment buying and the stock market crash were the major causes of the great depression. Before the great depression having debt was no longer shameful because of this people kept buying and buying, 3 out of 4 radios were on installment plans and 60 percent of automobiles and furniture were also on plans. They were buying faster than their income was expanding. As time went on it was only a matter of time before purchases would slow down, with these purchases slowing down the cutback slapped the whole economy (doc 6).
The Great Depression was devastating to many people. From 1929 - 1939 life was a struggle. This all began when the stock market crashed in 1929 causing a great effect on people. Most stopped using banks and no longer trusted them. Jobs were scarce and people looking for them were plentiful.

It began with the stock market crash on October 29 1929, which had lost millions of investors, markets had lost $30 billion dollars in two days, making it ten times more than the annual budget the U.S had spent for WWI, and prices were dropping until the end of November.
The Great Depression was a time when mostly everyone started to loss their their money,business, and homes. Many people lost their jobs and that made them go to their local banks and withdraw their money, but the banks did not have their money, all the people that wanted there money back lost it all because the bankes went broke. The people were now poor and the government didn't help them. Saving and investing was really important in that time.

Many individuals were affected by this stock market crash which led to destroying young innocent lives. This was the time where a majority of individuals were happy that WW1 is over, but then again it went back to a horrible state due to stock markets. For instance, for those who had a credit card and spent a lot of money on the loan they borrowed came out as a horrible lifestyle when Great Depression happened.
The average income of the American family dropped 40 percent from 1929 to 1932. Income fell from $2,300 to $1,500 per year. People lost their jobs, struggled to provide for their families, and subsequently business failed. Just as people were optimistic about the overall state of America it took a turn for the worst. The great depression hit in the fall of 1929.

President Hoover was a bad president and then when FDR took over he wanted to change it. Hoover did one thing by making the Hoover Dam and saving money by making water into electricity. Americans bought goods, the companies gained money, the companies shared less with employees, companies bought stock, employees couldn’t buy products, companies made less money because the Americans couldn’t afford anything.
People that were sick couldn’t go and buy medicine because markets were crashing and prices were going up which some people couldn’t afford the medicine. People were getting sick of lack of nutrition. “ We have gone through some difficult times like everyone else perhaps our working together and respecting each other’s abilities, in addition to that little thing called love”, said Cynthia Weil. Surviving the depression was really hard on people they they didn’t have money to survive they would die if sickness or lack of nutrition. They couldn’t get money because there was no jobs, most of the jobs were in the western part of the United

Although that is what triggered the Great Depression there were many underlying causes that lead up to the stock market crashing. Some of the underlying causes include under-consumption/over-production, uneven distribution of wealth, loose banking and corporate regulations, tariffs policies, and the stock market.

I was 10 years old when my parents finally allowed me to help cultivate the corn crops on the plantation we owned. Even though the hot Mexico sun was beating down and the air was so humid you could feel it on your fingertips, I loved every second of it. Year after year, I remember salvaging a few ears of corn and running back into the house, hoping that I don’t hear my parents coming after me. “Andrea!” they would shout, and I would giggle and put my hands behind my back. Then, I would stuff the stolen crops in the small crevice between the cupboard and the wall.
