As one reads Harry Potter, several things can pop into their head. One might be; some of these characters are like mythological figures. One comparison is Narcissus and Cedric Diggory, two famous youths. They are two alike, yet different characters. Both are athletic and handsome, but they have entirely different personalities. Narcissus and Cedric have similar appearances. Narcissus is described as a handsome youth with many nymphs in love with him. At Hogwarts, so many girls like Cedric. When Narcissus is hunting, many a nymph looked upon him and loved him. In the Goblet of Fire, Harry thinks, “ He had been starting to quite like Cedric- prepared to look over the fact that he had once beaten him in Quidditch, was handsome, popular, and nearly everyone’s favorite champion. People mourned for the two when they died. Narcissus died from dehydration and starvation as he stared at his reflection. Cedric was killed by the Avada Kedavra or Killing Spell cast by Poter Pettigrew. Nymphs plucked and kissed the flowers that had sprouted up from where Narcissus died. During the end of the year feast at Hogwarts, Dumbledore honors Cedric when he says, “But first I must acknowledge the loss of a very fine person who should be sitting here today- Cedric Diggory.” The great sadness that was caused, was not created just by the fact that the two they died young, but also because of their reputation.
Narcissus and Cedric had differences as well as similarities. Their deaths are one example. In the story, Echo and Narcissus, Narcissus is described as slowly fading away. In the Goblet of Fire, Mrs. Diggory said, “ He suffered very little then,” when talking to her husband about their son’s death. Also, the two have different qualities. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Katie Bell describes Cedric as strong and silent. To the Weasley twins, this means Cedric is “too thick to string two words together.” But this really means that he was sensible enough to speak only when it was absolutely necessary. Cedric also thinks before he speaks. Just because people look alike, it doesn’t mean they act the same.
People are often distinguished by the way they look. This is portrayed in movies. People that are pretty or handsome are popular and mean. They are “the higher class.” It is sometimes true, but it is most likely false. People can look good and act kindly. The moral of this is to never judge a book by its cover. This means, what looks bad on the outside, can look good on the inside and vice versa. Get to know people first, and then decide whether they are nice or
