Before 1975, education for disabled students looked a lot different than it does today. Half of students with disabilities were not receiving appropriate education, and those who did were all grouped together, regardless of disability (“A Short History” pages 8-9). The video “Celebrating 35 Years of IDEA” and the article “A Short History of Special Education Law” show how the 1975 passing of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, later named Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, allowed students with disabilities to have increasing access to general education classrooms and curriculum. The passing of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act in 1975 began protecting the rights and meeting the needs of children with disabilities
