Abby Kruse Ms. Grose Spanish II December 10, 2014 Celia Cruz Celia Cruz is best known as one of the most popular salsa performers. She was born October 21st, 1925, in Havana, Cuba. She died on November 10th, 2003 with the devastation of Brain Cancer, in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Celia is known as the “Queen of Salsa” as well as “The Queen of Latin music.” She was a Cuban-American singer and recorded 23 gold albums. A gold album is an award for a musician which they receive when 500,000 of their albums are sold. She performed more than 40 years professionally. After she stopped performing, she still continuously throughout her life, amused many Hispanics and non-Hispanics around the world with all of her rhythms and albums. On October 4th, 1948 she had become known as the Queen of Salsa music, which was in Venezuela. Salsa falls under two categories, dance and music. This term “salsa” was encouraged and retailed in New York City throughout the 1970s. Salsa can relate to some other Cuban genres such as the mambo and the chachachá. Salsa is mostly defined as a modern style of Cuban Son. Even though salsa is both a style of dance and music Cruz only sang Salsa music. Celia Cruz spent the majority of her career working in the United States and partially in Latin American countries. Her music was mostly popular in the Hispanic and Latino Culture. She made Latin music more popular and had electrifying performances filled with excitement. Cruz even tried something new and performed with a Cuban Orchestra group. Celia did this to help mobilize this organization into the public. Toward the end of Celia’s career she branched out into other types of genres like hip-hop
