To "censor" is to review something and to choose to remove or hide parts of it that are considered unacceptable. Censorship is the name for the process or idea of keeping things like obscene word or graphic images from an audience. In 2010, WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange were targeted for posting more than a quarter million secret U.S. documents. Many of these documents involved the national security. The New York Times soon published these documents. The U.S. Air Force retaliated by blocking the newspaper's website from its computers. The lawyers of the Air Force Materiel Command, said: "If a family member of an Air Force employee accesses WikiLeaks on a home computer, the family member may be subject to prosecution for espionage." …show more content…

On November 1, 1968, the MPAA's movie classification system was put into effect. This system gave a rating (G, PG, PG–13, R, or NC–17) to a movie based on the movie's content. These ratings serve as cautionary warnings for parents. This is still used today. From 2001-2007, the movie The Profit was censored in the United States. The film is a parody of the life of L. Ron Hubbard. It supposedly shows the power behind the religious faith of Scientology. Distribution of the film was prohibited by an American court order, which was a result of a lawsuit brought by the Church of Scientology. The filmmaker says that the film is not about Scientology. This makes people believe the world is a good place. In 1984, articles are rewritten to make people believe that the world is good. They believe Big Brother and the government is good. Citizens don't know the awfulness of the world like what's going on in the war. By deleting videos, US citizens aren't informed on what's going on in the world or war also. Along with Televisions and movies, music is also constantly being censored. From blurring out words to disapproving the message being conveyed, the government can make any necessary changes. There were several issues with “inappropriate” songs that were released containing violent, obscene, or indecent material. As a result, songs may be banned, groups can be banned, and songs can become forbidden to own or sell. In one situation, an owner of a music store was arrested for selling forbidden music from a group that was accused of talking against the government/police
