Censorship is the suppression of speech or other public things, that may be considered harmful for certain viewers. Censorship can happen on a massive level, like the government only letting you see what they want you to see. Censorship can also happen on a local level, like a yeshiva not teaching about the big bang. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the government has a censorship of all literature. All people who have literature in their possession will be killed. I personally believe that censorship is bad.

Censorship is bad because it prevents people from learning the truth. The truth is a very powerful thing, but nonetheless people deserve to know it. Throughout Fahrenheit 451, the main character Guy Montag is on a quest to learn the real truth and stop it from getting burned. In real life, dictators use censorship to give off a positive impression of themselves. Dictators also use it to remove any anti-dictatorship propaganda. Radical religious groups like the Taliban use censorship to compel the population. In Fahrenheit 451, the “truth” that Beatty offers is just a manipulation of what actually happened. The first amendment says that we have a freedom of speech. By censoring different things it violates that law. In Fahrenheit 451, it shows how important laws are. Throughout the book people follow the law of not having books and reporting people who do. Even Guy’s wife helped report him.
