The novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury was written in 1953. It mainly focused on censorship in a technology filled world. At the time the book was written, the world was in the earlier stages of technology, making the books idea very ironic because of how the world came to be just like Bradbury expected it to be, filled with technology. What the book feeds to the reader is that censorship is a tactic used, by the government, allowing them to control your mindset and what you do just by censoring one thing. The protagonist Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag, is a fireman but not a traditional one; he starts fires instead of stopping them. He does this because the government had tabooed books. Throughout the whole novel it is seen that books are illegal and unneeded in the dystopian society. As Montag states in one part of the book “And then Clarisse McClellan said: Do you mind if I ask? How long have you worked at being a fireman? Since I was twenty, ten years ago. Do you ever read any of the books you burn? He laughed. "That's against the law! Oh. Of course.” Drawing a picture for the reader that books were barred and seen as destructive, books were symbolized in the book as a bad thing, because of what they did to people’s minds. This in reality is just giving everyone an open mindset. This is shown later on in the book when Montag goes rogue and steals books from a scene where he had to burn an apartment free of books. From there he tries to read the book and soon after his Captain catches him and plans on getting him killed. However, Beatty was being an interlope and Montag did not concur with him, so he burned Beatty and a few other firemen to death.
