Throughout the years, countless books have been banned from libraries and schools because of the false displays of political, legal, religious, or moral standpoints. The term used to describe the banning of books is called censorship. In order to provide an appropriate view for readers, especially young readers, books containing ill-advised notions should be banned from schools. John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, includes various issues that could potentially harm a young reader’s perspective of right and wrong. Of Mice and Men should be censored in schools because of the continuous and redundant use of profanity, racism, and misogyny. It is clear to the readers that women are treated very different from men. For instance, there are only two female characters throughout the entire novella, one of which is not even given a name. Aunt Clara, Lennie’s aunt, is seen as Lennie’s caregiver. She does not have any traits that describe her as loving or caring. “[Lennie] refers to her as ‘a lady’ who used to give him mice” (Source 4). She is seen as a woman in Lennie’s life and nothing more. Throughout the entire novel, Curley’s Wife is still never given a name. She is depicted as a huge flirt that always seeks attention. She does not receive any respect from the other men on the ranch; even her husband treats her poorly. George and the other men know that the involvement with her will only cause trouble. George says, “She’s gonna make a mess… That Curley got his work cut out for him. Ranch with a bunch of guys on it ain’t no place for a girl, specially like her” (Steinbeck 51). The men all know that Curley’s wife is a flirt, and Steinbeck makes it clear to readers that she puts herself out there and throws herself at people. Curley’s wife is treated very poorly by every single man working on the ranch. Readers, especially young boys, will receive the wrong impression on the correct way to treat women. Despite the fact that the use of misogyny can reveal an uncommon social knowledge to readers, if taught mistakenly, students will not obtain a clear understanding. Without a precise apprehension on misogyny, readers will perceive the wrong conception, which could likely result in the promotion of the mistreatment of women.
