Over the 19th and 20th century, business was skyrocketing as high it can including movies because of their creativity, but, in these movies, censorship slowly made its way through the industry, which limited the creativity of writers in the movies. Even though business was booming in movies, censorship was developing its way into a larger form, which is now today’s rating system. In this research paper, we will be discussing about what was before the rating system and what is it now in the modern day. Cinema was at its reach promoting drug use, sex, and violence. Violence was one of the most important debates in censorship because of World War II (Boland). The Hay’s Code established that any movie that would be passed by the Production Code Administration will first have to get the movies be mandatorily passed through the Hays Code which will first approve if the content in the movie is acceptable or unacceptable. Once approved that it was acceptable, a certificate will be given to the businesses having the right to put their film in theatres. If the content was unacceptable, this certificate will not be given to the writers and will then not be shown in theatres, but they will be given the right to review their movie and delete what is objectionable to their standards of the Hay’s Code by the cost of $25,000 if the film was changed. The president of the Hay’s Code Will H. Hayes retired in the year 1945, when the name was changed into the Motion Picture Association of America (Robichaux). Today, because of these pressures, the creativity of Hollywood’s pictures still remains to be limited even though the Hay’s Code disappeared from existence. By using the rating system, the person that plans to watch whatever type of movie using the classification in the rating system to see what is suitable for them as the audience. Even though censorship will keep on developing, because of this, censorship will become more complex to a point where filmmakers will have parts of their film censored (Brevet). Even though we may think censorship was a bad thing, it first opened our eyes to see the real world in 1946 to 1962, the modernist period (Boland). When the modernist period took place at these times, this gave filmmaker more ideas. These ideas changed all the movies drastically by creating a more visual and realistic type of movies, which changed cinema today during the year of 1963 to 1977. This change was known as to be one of the most important changes of history (Boland). Overall, censorship had many negatives and positives, but movies are still being shown with appropriate content using the classification of the rating
