The Dangers of Uncensored Libraries In this day and age we have access to a lot of media; however, did you know that we only have access to a small portion of the internet? The act of hiding some media is called censorship. According to the Oxford Online Dictionary, “Censorship is the suppression of any part of books, films, news etc, that are considered obscene , or a threat to society.” One place censorship belongs is in public libraries. Should we allow all kids to have access to profane of pornographic material? Censorship is absolutely necessary in public libraries. Why do we need censorship? Without censorship we are exposing inappropriate content to our kids (debate.org). In addition to this, most kids in middle school agree. A survey done by Luke Banks shows that 53% of kids age 12 to 15 think that we should have censorship. Book banning is.We always hear about why book banning is wrong, because we hear about all the great books that are banned; however, a plethora of bad books are also banned. One example is the book “Go Ask Alice”, by Beatrice Sparks. According to dangerous books.wordpress.com, “Its reasons for being banned are legitimate within the guidelines as it displays extreme profanity and drug use.” Another example is the Face on the Milk Carton. According to prezi.com, “The face on the milk carton is banned because of “sexual content, challenge to authority and inappropriate for age group.” Both these books portray normal people doing horrible things. If these were not banned, kids who were still developing may stumble upon either one of these, or one of the many other books that were banned and believe that it is ok to do what is shown such as drugs or
