Central Focus Describe the central focus and the essential literacy strategy for comprehending OR composing text you will teach in the learning segment. The central focus of my literacy unit is understanding figurative language and being able to identify it and use it in writing. In my first lesson my students will learn the different types of figurative language. In my second lesson, my students will learn how to identify figurative language within a text. In my third and final lesson, my students will practice including figurative language in their own writing. They will read stories both as a group and independently. The students will also write their own stories that include each type of figurative language we discuss. They will be able to identify figurative language in stories they read as well as in their own writing. Explain how your plans build on each other to help students make connections between the essential literacy strategy to comprehend OR compose text and related skills that support use of the strategy in meaningful contexts. My unit begins by introducing each type of figurative language. We will thoroughly discuss each type and provide examples. As we continue to practice identifying these, the students will look for figurative language within stories during our second lesson. In our final lesson, the students will write a story about an idiom taken literally that includes each type of figurative language. After the students are introduced to figurative language, we continue to practice identifying it every day. The students then begin to look for it in texts. I have designed my lesson using the scaffolding method. We will begin this unit working together as a whole class. During the first lesson, we will practice and learn about each type of figurative language. The students will then work with their tables to differentiate between figurative language examples. To conclude the lesson, the students will identify figurative language examples on their own with needed support if necessary. In my second lesson we begin without another group practice so the students can recall what they learned the day before together. We then learn how to identify figurative language within a text as a whole class. I will guide them through our first story as we learn how to do this. The students are then given time to find figurative language within a story on their own. Finally, in the last lesson, the students will work together at the beginning to review again. I will address any misconceptions and confusions before we begin our final assessment as a whole class. I will make sure I do this with the whole class in case there is more than one student with this misunderstanding. Finally, the students will write a story using the various forms for figurative language on their own. They are only doing this individual assignment on their own after many demonstrations and group
