Later they got split up, but that did not them from giving up hope. through many rough events and scenarios, Elie had to work hard to stay alive and try to get out. In “Night”, the theme of the memoir is don’t give up hope, because there is always something positive in the end.
While reading/watching As I Lay Dying, Of Mice and Men, and Their Eyes Were Watching God, we have taken a close look into the characters and their identities. What I have found from these stories is that there is a common element of a protagonist whose life is defined by their struggle and burden, and that this reveals that Modern Literature aims to encourage people to form their identities, and that their actions define them. Addie Bundren, the main character of As I Lay Dying, struggled with loneliness her entire life. She believed that life was simply preparing her to be dead forever, so it could be said that she was a pessimist. Because of her outlook on life, she often found herself alone.
To be alone can be comforting and helpful in recharging a person’s energy levels, but to be lonely takes on an entirely different meaning. Loneliness is accompanied by isolation, melancholy, and a deep desire for human interactions. No person desires to feel lonely and instead craves for intimacy and companionship with the occasional wish to be left alone for a few hours, but never for too long. In Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless claimed that he always wanted to be alone and did not want to make deep, meaningful relationships with the people he encountered on his journey. He preferred to stick to his own company and instead hold a connection with nature around him.
“Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into light” (Keller). During dark times faith is essential to not give up. Many Jewish prisoners in the holocaust used faith to persevere hope in the distressing death camps. But for many, a loss of faith was prevalent during these dehumanizing experiences. One prisoner that underwent this loss of faith was Elie Wiesel and he wrote a memoir titled, Night, to express this unforgettable time in his life.

Loneliness can often make a person feel empty and upset. It can leave a person in despair and make them feel like they have no ambition. Steinbeck presents the possibility of forlornness and men who chip away at ranches,

But most of the story is a form of symbolism. This story gives the reader a look at what it feels like to be lonely. In this world it’s seems hard, cold, and alone. The world seems dead. But many people in our world would say it’s not that different then the one Ray Bradbury wrote about.
The motif of loneliness is explored throughout John Steinbeck's novella, Of Mice and Men, not only through the main characters, but the secondary characters as well. Of Mice and Men has many examples of discrimination. Some of the best examples are racism and sexism, which is why two of the characters are shown to be lonely. Crooks, the stable hand, is black, which makes all the others on the ranch want to have nothing to do with him. Similarly, Candy is outed since he is an old cripple.
