The dangers of religious cults Specific Purpose Statement: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to recognize the dangers of cults, and be persuaded to not join one. Finally, how to stop people from joining. Body I. To start, cults and religious groups can be two very different things.. A. When we hear something that doesn’t follow our beliefs we usually jump to defend our religions. 1. According to Dr. Paul Martin cult problems are so prevalent that the chances of having a family member join a cult are greater than the chance of a family member catching chicken pox. 2. However, Dr. Martin says that 25 percent of cult members world-wide will suffer harm that will affect the way they are able to function in any type of domain over their lifetime. 3. Psychological issues, death and many other problems are heavily related when joining a cult. 4. Take a look at some statistics if you don’t believe cults are dangerous. B. These religious groups aren’t just taking your freedom, but also all your financial stability. 1. In the United States for every person that joined a cult at least four of their family members are impacted by suffering personal and economic losses. 2. The percentage is great for being one of the most neglected and understudied social problems faced in the world. We are all considered our own person, so being told what you can and can’t do doesn’t particularly make us happy. 1. Even though there are many ways to recognize a cult many people are oblivious to their tactics. 2. When it comes to their persuasion, usually they offer a way to save your soul. They are mostly known to try to convince you what you are doing is wrong and that they know how to guide you in the right direction. 3. For example, the life they offer you is never as good as they make it seem. 4. When joining a cult most times they ask you to give up everything you had and give your earnings to the leader so the fortune is spread amongst the whole community. They also teach you the outside world (family, and friends) are evil. B. The idea of being a part of something big means something to all of us. 1.
