The objective of our experiment was to determine how temperature effects the distance that Cepaea nemoralis travel. We predicted that at higher temperatures C. nemoralis would travel a greater distance. Upon conducting the experiment, it was concluded that the snails traveled further at higher temperatures, in both trials. However, trial 1 was statistically significant, whereas trial 2 was not. As per our prediction, from trial 1, we are able to conclude that at higher temperatures (20˚C) the snails traveled a greater distance compared to at a lower temperature (1˚C). This is due to the biological workings of ATP and muscle contractions. Because C. nemoralis are ectotherms, their body temperature is regulated by the external environment (Freeman …show more content…

In 1979, an experiment conducted by A.L. Steigen studied how temperature affected the energy metabolism of banded and unbanded Cepaea hortensis. Steigen came to the conclusion that banded snails compared to unbanded snails have a higher metabolic rate at higher temperatures because the pigmentation absorbs more solar radiation (A.L. Steigen, 1979). Hence, it was found in Steigen’s study that unbanded yellow snails move further at higher temperatures compared to banded yellow snails (A.L. Steigen, 1979). In our experiment, in both trial 1 and trial 2 the unbanded snails moved further at higher temperatures. This result is the same as Steigen’s study. However, our results may be due to chance as we had a small sample size and in each trial, there was not the same amount of banded and unbanded snails. We cannot be sure that the unbanded snails moved further because of their …show more content…

In trial 1 the snails moved approximately 32 mm further at 20˚C compared to 1˚C and in trial 2 they moved 22 mm further at 30˚C compared to at 25˚C. However, the results of trial 2 are not significant and this may be due to the two treatment temperatures being too similar. To increase confidence, we recommend that this experiment is repeated and that there being a greater difference between the two treatment levels of trial 2. Additionally, the experiment can be repeated with conditions such as humidity being controlled and more specific temperature ranges to gain more in-depth results. As humidity is a factor which affects snail movement, controlling it would lead to results that can be better
