Cesar Chavez Accomplishments

Cesar Chavez was born to Juana and Librado Chavez on March 31st, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona and had six other siblings. During the Great Depression his family was evicted from their land, forcing them to migrate and become farm workers. This led him to drop out of school and become a full-time field worker just after finishing middle school to help provide for his family. They worked in many different california fields such as ones in Oxnard, Brawley, King city, Atascadero, Gonzales, Wasco, Salinas, Mendota, Selma, McFarland, Kingsburg, and Delano. His own experience as a migrant farm worker, and witnessing the experience of other workers opened his eyes how poorly treated they all were. Therefore, recognizing injustice at an early stage of his life later inspired his civil rights activism. Also, at age 19 after World War II, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served for two years. He then reflected on his service as the two worst years of his life. Soon after returning from the Navy, he married Helena Favela and they settled in Delano, California where they had eight children. If it wasn’t for the movement he put so much effort into growing, their rights would have taken a lot longer to to gain. Millions of people supported him, including politicians such as Robert F. Kennedy. However, he faced a lot of opposition too, from politicians, unions, and grape/vegetable growers which created obstacles, making his goals harder to achieve. An example of this would be the growers’ signing to the Teamster union. Although he faced difficulties, his efforts never ended which resulted in The California Labor Relations Act, this act was passed through the California legislature and helped farm workers in the state boycott and collectively
