Do you work at a department store or the retail industry, well if you do, have you gotten Hispanic customers that say the words, "me speak no English." And, wish you can help them but, you have one problem, "you don't know how to speak Spanish." Millions of dollars are lost every year because, of mal-communication between the customer which is Hispanic and the vendor. But, a lot of these Hispanics choose not to speak English by choice, and others do not know how to learn English. But, there is ways they can learn and I will explain how in my writings. Also, if we can get foreigners to speak English this country can run a whole lot smoothly. While it might not be difficult to learn English, there are certainly some frustrations that go along with learning this language. While people do not have to worry about verbs and adjectives that change with a person's gender, there are other challenges that English presents. Here are some tips to learn English more quickly. Of course, the best way is to 1. find a native speaker! This is crucial. Native speakers will assist in your pronunciation, fluency and understanding of slang or out-dated sayings. If you can't find someone to speak with face-to-face, join an internet group and try to have regular contact in emails, text chats and/or voice chats with a native speaker. As a teacher of the English language and American literature for years, I have become acutely aware that, in the USA, different regions of the country use different nouns to name the same object. To site an example that I stated in a previous article, New Englanders call all carbonated soft drinks soda, while upstate New Yorkers call the same stuff pop. ( I am also acutely aware that many of our citizens, particularly the youth, use English as a second language...and they don't have a first one.) Today, English is recognized as the universal language. It is spoken in every country on the planet, and the number of users of English is second only to the number of folks who speak Chinese. With such a broad base of usage, it isn't surprising that, in different countries around the world, English has mutated to fit different lifestyles, histories and cultures. Over here in Ireland, Mary Ellen and I have made list of words and expressions that are English, but their meanings are probably alien to American speakers of English. For instance, if you asked for bacon at breakfast, do you know what you'd get? Yes, you'd get meat from a pig, but it wouldn't be the crisp, thin strips that you would be wanting. If you wanted those you would ask for rashers. If you asked for bacon, you would get a slice of fatty ham about a quarter inch thick, much like Canadian bacon.
