They were all college educated. The "Progressives" believed that the government were the only people who could end up changing anything. There were three people who were the most powerful voices part of the "Progressives". They were also called social reformers, Jane Addams, and to journalist, Ida Tarbel and Jacob Riis. These three social reformers wanted to expose all of the evils that lived in the world like "corporate greed, combating fear of immigrants, and urging Americans to think hard about what democracy meant.
Populism and Progressivism were two very important movements in US history, that occurred during the outbreaks of the workers union after the civil war. These movements led to the formation of the Populist party in 1892 and the Progressive party in 1912. While there are many similarities between the two movements, they are also very different. The two parties fought for very similar things.
During the progressive movement a wave of social activism and political reform swept the nation. Between monopolies, corruption and new activism for women's suffrage along with civil rights, the 1890s to 1920s was a time of advancement in thinking. Ida B. Wells made many significant contributions to the future of women and Black Americans. Initially during reconstruction after the civil war, along with the passing of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, African Americans had been hopeful for equality. Moreover, around the time of the progressive era, they had been faced with horrific violence, economic struggles and enforcement of segregation.
Between the 1890s and World War One, reform efforts started taking place by the progressives. The progressives were not a single unified group and even had some contradicting goals. They were middle class urban dwellers and some were women. The progressives wanted to end prostitution, Americanize immigrants, antitrust legislation created, women’s suffrage, and the start of prohibition.
The 1900s was a time period filled with political corruption, social inequality and injustice, discrimination, poor working and living conditions. The progressive movement resulted in response to these issues. Members and advocates of this movement were usually white (some blacks too), middle-class, Christian, college educated women (and men). They sought to achieve social justice through equality and enhance life in America for everyone. To further the nation’s democratic ideals, they hoped to incorporate reforms based on the expectations of the majority public.

Jane Addams The Progressive Era, 1890-1920, accomplished great change in the Unites States of America. Many reformers and activits demanded for change in education, food and drug policies, and most importantly the govermenet. The goal for the movement was the purify the nation. One of the main activits during this time was Jane Addams. Jane Addams is often refered to as a social and political pioneer.

The early progressives rejected the ideas of the social Darwinism principle, which was a theory to justify imperialism, racism, political conservatism, and discourage interference and reform that was approved and followed by the rich and powerful leaders. Between 1880 and 1910 progressivism was the improvements and progress of the United States of America by the expansion of democracy and achieving economic and social fairness. During that period of time progressivism was an opportunity for the government to create reforms at national and international measures. Such as: Child Labor Law of 1887 and the prohibition. The strength of progressivism came from farmers, politicians, and middle class workers. Progressivism is truly how the government regulated, got involved, and changed aspects to improve the country.
Some of these issues were remove the corruption and undue influence, include more people within the political process, a conviction that the government must play a pivotal role to fix social problems and economic factors. The progressivist movement began as a social movement but began to push more into the political sector. The problems that this era faced such as poverty, greed or racism could be combated by providing a good education a good and efficient workplace, and a safe environment. This social group were mainly college educated and lived mainly within the city limits and identified that the government could be used as a tool in order to push their agenda. Freedom redefined as the fulfillment of human capabilities.
Workers felt unappreciated and that without rising up against their employers, they would be left starving,homeless, or dead. Workers wanted more money, an eight hour workday, safe working conditions, and protection against wage cutting. A couple of reformers during the Progressive Era were Jane Addams and Jacob Riis. Both worked toward helping the immigrants, women, children, and the poor working class. Jane Addams was a reformer who opened a settlement house to help the less fortunate.
The progressive era which lasted from 1890-1920 in American society was the institution of radical reforms brought about by the millions of Americans involved in volunteer organizations across the country. During this time Americans worked to create solutions to the problems caused by the rapid industrialization and urbanization of the country. The progressive era was not a single movement, but rather a collection of movements all of which were intended to improve the lives of Americans. This was a truly remarkable time for women and the end of the era would see almost universal women’s suffrage with the passing of the nineteenth amendment in 1920.
From 1896 to 1924, America went through a period known as progressivism in which people of all walks of life banded together to oppose conservatism and reform society. Progressives generally believed that government is necessary for change, however; it had to more significantly embody the ideals of democracy. Some of the specific changes that progressives wanted were regulating railroads, a direct election of senators, graduated income tax, limited immigration and eight-hour workdays. By supporting these changes, the progressives hoped to promote and expand democracy and thus give the people more power.
