The California Gold Rush Finding gold would be a good way to make some easy money. Well that’s not always true. In the late 1850’s people started finding a lot of gold in California. But people didn’t realize the challenges they would face. Some challenges people would have to go through during the California Gold Rush were the travel, the crime, and actually becoming successful.
One challenge people would face during the California Gold Rush was the travel to get there. On land, traveling to California is about 2,000 miles and 123 days if you’re coming from missouri(The California Gold Rush, paragraph 1). In some years only half the people who were traveling to the gold rush would actually live all the way there. Traveling isn’t as easy as it looks and you have to bring all your supplies with you and it would be impossible to make it up a hill with too much weight from supplies. The trails weren’t the easiest to travel through either. A lot of people would travel by sea which was about 17,000 miles and a four to nine month journey depending on weather. Unfortunately a lot of crime seemed to happen. During the gold rush if people were caught stealing or committing a crime they would be whipped, their ears would be cut off, or they would be hanged depending on what the crime was. 250,000 people traveled to the gold rush and there were no police(Traveling to the gold rush, paragraph 1). That is a lot of people for back then and most likely some will commit a crime. It was very easy to get away with a crime. If someone took your property more times than none you wouldn’t get it back. Gold was even stolen sometimes and there goes many hours and a lot of money that you will never get back. And that is another challenge people faced during the California Gold
