Challenging Expectations In 'La Vida Robot'

Throughout this unit we have read about people who challenged expectations, challenging expectations are worth the struggles and sacrifices they faced because it made them stronger and they learned how they related to others that faced similar issues. First of all, in both “La Vida Robot” by Joshua Davis and “The Freedom Writers Diary” by The Freedom Writers with Erin Gruwell articles, students learned how to relates to others that faced similar issues they went through which made them stronger as human beings. In article “La Vida Robot” Davis states “Now the four underprivileged high school students from phoenix Carl Hayden community High School have a better chance of paying for college –and their story may soon be a big-budget movie.” This shows that throughout everything the students have been through, at the end they were rewarded with something life changing. Also in article “The Freedom Writers Diary” the authors The Freedom Writers with Gruwell state “I guess I’ll have to wait for the war to end like Anne and Zlata did except I won’t be taken advantage of I’m going to be strong.” This reveals that the student who wrote this piece felt so connected to Anne and Zlata because of the issues all of them went through. It doesn’t matter what others think, even when you do challenge expectation you end up proving them wrong and showing them you could do it, succeed and gain something they couldn’t because you were the only one willing to risk your life or what you have in order to do something great for yourself. In text “La Vida Robot” Davis states “He was not used to dealing with Mexican American teenagers sporting gold chains, fake diamond rings and patchy, adolescent mustaches.” This demonstrates that the boys were judged just by what they were wearing, yet at the end of the article they ending up gaining something they thought they would never
