Despite the fact that Chance the Rappers career started because of a high school suspension, he is a phenomenal musician because of his notable albums, his positive influence in Chicago, and the 3 Grammy Awards he received. Chancelor Johnathan Bennett known as Chance the Rapper was born and raised in Chicago. He grew up in west Chatham neighborhood on the southside of Chicago.Thus far, he has released 3 albums, 10 Day, Acid Rap and Coloring Book. 10 Day being the mixtape that launched his career. Chance attended Jones College Prep High School where he was was suspended for smoking weed. Throughout his career, Chance has had a positive influence on Chicago. The most recent being his $1 million donation to Chicago Public Schools on March 6, 2017. Education funding is an ongoing issue for Chicago Public Schools. Chance wants his donation to be a ‘call to action’ to make change and ‘help give our children the proper resources they need to learn’ (Perez, 2). “Our kids should not be held hostage because of political positioning” Chance stated. Chance has encouraged young people to take action on matter of importance and become politically involved. In 2017, Chance won 3 Grammy Awards for best new artist, best rap performance for his song “No Problem”, and best rap album “Coloring Book”. He made Grammy history for being an independent artist and winning 3 out of the 7 awards he was nominated for. The rules were changed this year to allow artists who were unsigned to be nominated for awards. Also, musicians who release their music on streaming devices only like Apple Music and Spotify could be nominated (Wang, 2).
