In a culture where it seems that music speaks where words may fail, many tend to wonder what it is that music is telling our society today. Chance the rapper is a one of a kind in the music industry. He is breaking records by doing things off the record and winning grammys without selling his music. What are the values that he is promoting as an individual mainstream artist? Whereas expressing his faith and values may seem irrelevant, Chance the Rapper is extremely bold by furthering his career as an independent artist, given that he is defying odds in his genre of music and attention he gets from a wide variety of onlookers. Unfortunately, the message that is provoked is the truth in the flaws of America. Chance takes quite a unique approach in his music. He promotes his faith and values and yet, explains the problems and addictions he deals with on the daily basis. In Chance’s song “Angels” he rapped, “I got caught up with a little Xan/Can’t stop me but it slow me though.” In fact, he not only struggled with xanax but he has also dealt with acid as well, hence his album “Acid Rap”. It took him two years to come out with his latest and greatest album “The Coloring Book” because he was trying to put those problems in his rearview. He even tweeted in March of 2015, “Xanax the new Heroin. Don't let em fool u”. His choices in words in the music that he preaches, voices loudly the cries of what certain people can not, especially his bittersweet love for his hometown in Chicago. Also, in his song “Angels” he holds people accountable saying, “I got my city doing front flips when every father, mayor, rapper jump ship. I guess that's why they call it where I stay. Clean up the streets, so my daughter can have somewhere to play. I'm the blueprint to a real man”. Chance the Rapper does not care, he stands for what he believes in even for his career. That shows determination and even if you do not believe in what he does you can still agree that it takes guts to do everything that the world tells you will not make you successful. Taking a genuine leap of faith has lead him to become one of the most interesting rappers and has shown our culture that it is essential to be true to who you are.
