Have you ever had to move to a different country? The graphic novel, Almost American Girl, by Robin Ha, is about a girl who is forced to move to America with her mom. Not long after she arrives, she learns that her mom is going to marry the man they are staying with. Robin has to adjust to her new school, and make friends, which ends up being very hard for her. Eventually she finds a place where she belongs and friends that she is happy being with. The theme of this graphic novel is that change can be difficult, but is also important. The first reason why change was difficult for Robin was because she was just starting to fit in, when she found out that she had to move again. She also feels anger toward her mom, and blames her for what is happening. Her mom feels sympathy for her, and apologizes. After she yelled at her mom, she realized something. She realized that her mom was just trying to do what was best for them. This fits into the theme that change is difficult, but important because it shows how tough this change was for her. This is only one of the many reasons why this move was hard for Robin to adjust to. The second reason why change is difficult, but also important, was that when Robin moved schools, she also made lifelong friends. When Robin moved to Virginia, she made friends, and found somewhere that she fit into. When she grew up, she and her friends were still inseparable. Robin describes her friendship when she, on page 217, says, “We were there for each other through heartaches. We shared so many new experiences together. They were my soul sisters. With these girls by my side, there's no doubt in my mind that Mclean, Virginia, was my home.” When she describes this, she goes through flashbacks of when they were together. Robin feels grateful that her mom made her move from
