At first Pi starts to have problems with his eyes, "The next day I started feeling a stinging in my eyes. I rubbed, but the itch wouldn’t go away... By noon, everything was pitch-black" (241). After loosing sight Pi has a hallucination. Pi hears a voice, "Is someone there?.. Of course someone's there" (242) and starts to have a conversation with this new stranger. The two start to talk about the foods that they wish they had to eat with Pi started off with dishes such as, "rice and sambar...spicy tamarind sambar..." (243) and naming other vegan dishes. The stranger then starts to name the dishes that he would like, "boiled beef tongue with a mustard sauce... calf's brains in a brown butter sauce..." (245) and a lot of non-vegan dishes.
