Changes in Morality: The Roles of Lady Macbeth, the Three Witches, and a Plan in Shakespeare’s Macbeth
One of Shakespeare’s plays, Macbeth, it about the downfall of the main characters, Macbeth, and his wife Lady Macbeth. It is written based on the Elizabethan era, as it involves kings, queens, thanes, soldiers, and knights. Macbeth starts off as a regular thane who was ambitious as well as a great fighter. His morality is affected greatly through the course of the play. Macbeth’s morality changes through influences, such as his wife’s pressuring, the witches’ prophecy, and the fact that his plan worked for so long.

The first prophecy, which tells Macbeth that he will be the thane of Glamis and Cawdor, as well as become King, is used to confuse him, as well as to give him ideas. The exact words of the prophecy are: “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!”- Witches (1.3.49-51). When the first part comes true, it pushes some of his morals aside, giving him the idea to kill King Duncan. The second prophecy, which tells him to watch out for Macduff, tells him that he could not be killed by a man born of a woman, and that he will not die until the Birnam Wood marched to fight him, is used to make him arrogant. It also makes him think that he will never die. That helps his change of morality by letting him believe that there will be no consequences to him killing everyone that he does.
