In most great schools, assessment is at the heart of educating students. Not only is assessment used to support students in their learning, but it is also leveraged by Boards, administrators and teachers to certify the level of student learning.

During the 2014-15 school year, there were many assessment-related changes. Some schools transitioned to administering the Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) for the first time, other schools enhanced their skills in using the Performance Series assessment, and all schools made a successful transition to the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). In addition to these important changes, the Michigan Department of Education announced that, as of spring 2016, all high schools will now be required to administer the SAT.

For organizations that operate a high school, there are some noteworthy changes for the 2015-16 academic year:

• All Michigan high schools will administer the SAT to all eleventh grade students in the spring of 2016. In addition, the Michigan Department of Education will also require administration of the Michigan Merit Examination in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
• ACT, Inc. will still provide the WorkKeys assessment for all high school students for the next three years.
• All Michigan high schools will administer the PSAT for all ninth and tenth grade students beginning in the spring of 2l016.

In the Academies’ current Charter Contract, it states that student achievement and growth are measured by subject scores on the EXPLORE, PLAN, and ACT.
