The past can come back to haunt us, and if we don’t figure out our problems, it could lead to even bigger messes in the future. William Shakespeare wrote “Hamlet” in the 17th century, which tells the story of Prince Hamlet, who’s visited by a ghost of his father, then wants to seek revenge on his Uncle for taking his father's life and stealing the throne. Edgar Allan Poe wrote “The Black Cat” in the 19th century, which tells the story of a man who has many pets but is weirdly obsessed with his cat. The man is an alcoholic which ultimately leads him to do horrible things by the end. In Hamlet, the villain is indicated as being Hamlet but his choices were for adequate reasons even though they went against his religion. He made choices based on his past life trauma making it harder to overcome them. From his father being killed by his own uncle, to his girlfriend ending things led to depression and a horrible lifestyle. Not only does sinful nature occur in Hamlet but in the Elizabethan era. Religion played a huge role and sin was accustomed to decide right from wrong. Hamlet’s choices were ambiguous and filled him with guilt which points to how important religion was during the time it was written. Some might disagree with my argument but there are many key factors demonstrated in the story such as Hamlet feeling guilty about committing his sins. Hamlet wanted revenge on his uncle for what he did to his father which corrupted his religion, making sin an important portion of the story. An article by J. Oates continues to go deeper into the argument of sin saying “Despair as the sole sin that cannot be forgiven;” (Oates 2). The writer is explaining not much about sinning but it can easily be known. The article and “Hamlet” explain how sin is observed by different people. Indicating sin is always bad but others have different perspectives on it.
