Less than once a year someone is stranded on a deserted island. Have you ever wondered if you would survive? An inexperienced person could last about three weeks on a deserted island. In William Golding's Lord of The Flies he uses order and chaos to show that good can become evil and cause destruction in some way. The boys show both sides throughout the novel. They created chaos, but wanted to keep everything in order. They began to break down their society as their civilization debilitated before them. In addition to this, knowing what is important to survive or be saved will help in a myriad of ways. This adds to the order element, and being able to have control and order over a certain situation. The chaos, callous to the boys on the island, creates an enmity between everyone on the island. “Bollocks to the rules! We’re strong – we hunt! If there’s a beast, we’ll hunt it down! We’ll close in and beat and beat and beat!” (Golding 99). The process of not wanting to follow rules, expands the thought of chaos starting. Throughout the novel the chaos starts to take over. As the boys have been on the island for a long time, a chasm starts to develop and create chaos between them. “...the bloodied knife in his hand. The two boys faced each other. There was the brilliant world of hunting, tactics, fierce exhilaration, skill; and there was the world of longing and baffled commonsense” (Golding 71). In turn, the chaos leads to violence. The suggestion of two worlds leads you to believe that the path to civilization will be harder than the boys thought. “So that the revolting Barbarism, which began the war” (Sumner). This connects to Lord of The Flies because, when they start to chastise each other they begin to turn violent in a barbaric way. “Human flesh lacerated and seamed by the bloody scourge… and all this frightful, many-sided wrong is the declared foundation of a mock commonwealth” (Sumner).
