Chapter Seven: Commerce and Cultures 500-1500 With the second-wave civilizations ending, the third-wave hit with new advancements and observations about the world. New inventions and ideas from the second-wave era were set in place to keep the civilizations prospering. Land and sea trade routes and travelers made it simple to trade luxuries and discoveries of new religious practices. Marco Polo, Huili and Xuanzang wrote important information about what they witnessed in the new regions to which they had travelled. Their writings focused on religious practices which provided an awakening look into new cultures and their practices. Highlights and knowledge about Buddhism was established among the people of the new era. From these highlights, people were able to learn more and benefit from them. Buddhism was already taking part in Asia by the beginning of the third-wave era. Commoners believed that Buddhism was much more important than Hinduism. They got the help of Buddhist monks and higher rulers to spread the new religious beliefs. To make the spreading of new ideas simple they used the silk routs. Huili had written that Xuanzang had prayed to the statue with enlightenment. Many people showed up to same event to show their devotion. As Huili mentions in his journal “As that was the time when the monks dismissed the summer retreat, several thousands of people forgathered from far near. Those who saw the Master where choked with sobs with sympathy with him” . We can see that many people were among the celebration to honor Buddha. Since thousands of people attended, this shows that commoners and elite people followed Buddha. Buddhism practices did not take much for people to be able to reach their religious beliefs.
