Born into a rich family with a pedigree for really good education, Jorge Amado was a journalist and lawyer who took part in Brazilian political life. He was responsible for the law that guaranteed freedom of religion for his people. A look into the character of Ramiro shows a lot of people whom he had to face (who kept a lot of disparity between the people of the country and foreigners who come to Brazil to change the way they think and behave) while he was struggling with the law of the land to bring about reforms. The backdrop of the whole scenario goes very well with the issues in hand. It looks like he rules the city with an iron fist hidden beneath a velvet glove. There is a volcano inside his calm outside self that we as readers get to see only because it is described to us. The basic backdrop of the start of the book consists of the following plot. Cacao plantation owners (called "colonels,") wield a lot of political power in the region. But Mundinho Falcão, has recently moved to Ilhéus from Rio and is preparing to seize power from the colonels. The town patriarch, Colonel Ramiro Bastos, disapproves of the outsider's interference and vows not to surrender without a fight. I believe that he definitely belongs to a special league of writers that include Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Hemingway in my opinion. Despite a multitude of characters (initially a bit difficult to keep track), he's infused each one with his/her own unique personality and does an excellent job of drawing the reader in. There is a parallel story which runs along with the political and social background story that is constantly in the back of the reader’s mind during the whole book. It is necessary to understand the depth in the writing and the value that it holds in the story.
