My Forbidden Face by Latifa Logan Foster Section 1 (Chapter 1) This is the beginning of the book. The first implications of war are shown in these pages. At first, you can tell that Latifa does not want to believe that the Taliban are in her city. She then learns that the leader, Najibullah, and his brother have been hung in the town square. Latifa mentions during this segment that she is very scared. At some points she couldn’t even read or have any emotion except fear. Latifa talks about her emotions thoroughly and brings up the past a few times. This is what this chapter was mainly about in my opinion. They start to add laws that people have to abide by to not be killed. In the book the radio came on and announced things like anyone with weapons must bring it to the checkpoint near the mosque. Also announced that females could not leave their houses without what is called their “Mahram” which is a spouse of some sort. They also mention women cannot work outside their homes and cannot leave without a chadri. Women cannot wear any kinds of makeup or things of that nature. Afghani Men are required to grow beards and wear turbans. Later in the chapter Latifa finally grabs up the courage to put on her chadri and leave her home to see what’s happening outside of her home. The Taliban have taken control of the mosques and start making schools teaching all people the Taliban ways, also known as their version of the Koran, which is a sacred book sort of like the Bible. Latifa starts up a secret school like what her teacher did (Mrs. Farzia) to start teaching what is right. Latifa teaches 5 boys and 3 girls. All of their ages range from around 5 - 14 years old. Eventually Mrs. Fawzia was caught teaching in her underground school and was terribly beaten. They threw her down breaking her legs and drug her into prison by her hair. She then had to sign a document saying that she swore to never disobey the Taliban ever again. Latifa realizes that she has grown a lot since the beginning of this war. This shows she has self-realization that she can be strong and stand up for
