Book Review This book is about the spy ring used by George Washington during the Revolutionary War. He used these spies to gather information on where the British were located and what they were planning to do next. The success of the Culper Ring was able to help George Washington as he was getting important intel on British strategy and it helped him prepare for the British attacks. The authors of the book were able to use both primary and secondary sources in writing this book which was made to be read by the average American instead of something written for the scholars on the subject to read. They used a book wrote from one of the spies, Robert Townsend, in writing this book. There was also portions of letters than have been published that contains correspondence from the spies during their time as part of Washington’s ring. In addition, this book also draws upon other scholarly works about the spy ring. The use of this combination of sources helps give insight into both what the spies were thinking, as well as other historical analysis of the work that the spies did during the Revolutionary War when acquiring information to send to General Washington. The spy ring used by George Washington was able to gather vital details about the British tactics. The book did a good job of explaining the need for the spies and how General Washington probably would not have won the war otherwise. The author might have a pro-America bias in the writing. Since he is an individual who supported the American side there is the possibility that he might have over-exaggerated the effect of these spies during the Revolutionary War.
