Early in the chapter “Analyzing Texts and Writing Thesis Statements,” the author discuses the idea that rhetoric is linked to action. The author states, “it is far from ‘empty’ but rather can motivate audiences to produce particular outcomes” (Alfano and O’Brien 8) The author is saying that rhetoric doesn’t just make a person think about one particular subject, it leads them to think and explore other subjects and outcomes. The rhetorical situation (author, argument, audience) is helpful for an author or creator. For example when creating a speech the author would want to make sure that he/she is attending to the audience so that their attention is kept on the speech. The rhetorical situation will be very helpful for me in future writing assignments, it will help me make sure that I am not only writing about what I would like to read but what the rest of my audience would like to read as well. …show more content…

The author states, “today more than every, rhetoric operates not just through word choice but also through choice of multimedia elements” (Alfano and O’Brien 13). Rhetoric is not just visual or just written it has now combined to become one, where you have a picture and a caption or quotation that describes that particular event. The idea that an article no longer is just words on a page, it now has images to back up that piece encourages me to go out and read more articles. When I look at a page in a textbook or magazine and it is ninety percent words I don’t really want to read that particular page it tends to steer me away. I am a visual person and when I see pictures to go along with an idea or story I tend to be more interested and learn more about that
