McManus One of Us is Lying tells a story of four high school students being the suspects in the death of another student. Bronwyn, known as the genius of the school, and Addy, who is popular for her beauty, are in detention with three other students: Cooper, the athlete; Nate, the criminal; and Simon, the outcast. They were in detention for the phones they had in their backpacks, and all claimed it was not their phones. In detention, a car accident happens, distracting the students. Simon drinks a cup of water that contains peanut oil, which causes him to have a severe allergic reaction. He dies from the reaction moments after. If it ever came out that I’d actually done something to Simon, plenty of people would hate me.” This quote is found on page one hundred forty-four. It is in the narration of Cooper. The reason in which the quote was chosen is because of the way it refers to how Cooper feels about himself and how it also refers to the relationships between the suspects and Simon. It contains one of the first pieces of evidence of the relationships between the death of Simon and Cooper. The sentence shows how Cooper is known to be a great man. Even though he is viewed as an amazing person, Cooper is not exactly the person everyone imagined him to be. His narration of himself helps readers understand him more. “It’s been that way my whole life,” is a part of the quote that expresses the life of Cooper. Similar to Bronwyn and Addy, he is seen to have a rather good life. Especially since Cooper is a talented athlete, it can perfectly resemble the difficulties of keeping up with others’ expectations.
