Response to “The Importance of Sleep” As the media develops and objects referred to as distractors become more relevant in today's world, it has become hard for us to focus on what should truly be valued in our priorities. A big mistake a lot of us offer up is our sleep, however in “The Importance of Sleep '' composed by Luke Davis, he discusses the significance of putting your personal distractors away early and getting the recommended amounts of sleep as you will learn, comes with many benefits. In this multi genre article, he discusses the stages of sleep, the benefits that come out of going to bed earlier, and his personal experience with the benefits he listed. Starting this multi genre piece, Davis begins with a letter to his readers
“Now you hear what the house has to say…” This is the first line of the poem, Insomnia by Dana Gioia. This poem is about what happens at night when there is no one around and you are only left to your thoughts and the noises around you. This poem is a great representation of what it feels like to wake up with insomnia and be alone with only the darkness to keep you company. The language Gioia decides to use, fits very well in the poem. He uses descriptive phases like pipes clanking and water running in the dark to describe the way it feels at night.
In “If teenagers can stay in bed longer, why can’t the rest of us”, which appeared in “The Guardian” on 27th August 2014, author Dean Burnett, father of a toddler and therefore early riser, discusses the necessity of starting school later for adolescents. In the article he criticises the idea of changing regulations for school starting times only due to the reason that teenagers may need more sleep during puberty. Although Dean Burnett seems to understand the differences in sleep demands during puberty and adulthood, I tend to disagree with his general line of argumentation because his arguments appear to flaw in some places. This is extremely unhealthy for a person to do and doing it consistently over the course of their time in school can cause long-term negative health effects. The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler exploits the corruption and the absence of justice that was present in the 1930s. The novel is set in Los Angeles, which at the time was full of scheming city workers. The combination of dynamic and static characters in the story leads the reader into a whirlwind of murders that are unavenged. “Good-guy” detective Phillip Marlowe, is seen as a modern-day knight, left to slay the dragon and rescue the damsel in distress. However, the inexplicable amount of “dragons” that Chandler presents in the novel hinder Marlowe from being able to accomplish his goals without obstacles.
All of today's “super kids” want to be overachievers; however, in doing so, they are hindering their health by getting inadequate amounts of sleep. The way I interpret Bruni’s text is that he is trying to bring poor sleep habits into the light. One thing he could have done to improve his text was to offer a solution. Sadness is what one feels when thinking of the competitiveness of high school students today. Today’s teenagers are stressed out and sleep deprived, trying for that edge to make them better than the rest. Frank Bruni expresses this sadness in his article “Today’s Exhausted Superkids.” In the article, Bruni explains the problem with how hard today’s teenagers have to work and how it is affecting their growth, especially with sleep. Bruni states, “Before adulthood, a baseline amount is fundamental and nonnegotiable, or should be.”
To begin, In today’s society American teens are going to school energized and are eager to learn usually in the beginning of the school year. Although, over time some teens performance plummet in which some are said to be exhausted from being overworked and others say differently. However, two different articles have went in depth with the concept of kids and young teenagers being overstressed and exhausted from due to over work. One of the article is from Frank Bruni titled “Today’s Exhausted Superkids” where he collaborated on teenagers to be overstressed and exhausted from school courses. Yet, he had focused on wealthy/ privileged families.
My roommate has been coming back to the dorm at all hours of the night, disrupting my sleep. This has caused my sleep cycle to be disturbed and have become sleep deprived. A typical night’s sleep cycle consists of five stages which are N1 (R&K Stage 1), N2 (R&K Stage 2), N3 (R&K Stages 3 and 4), and R (R&K REM).

From the corner of my room stands a single illuminated tv silently playing episodes of Grey's Anatomy. Breaking this moment of tension, I reach for my phone to see what time it is . Pressing the power button revealed my worst fear: it was 2 o’clock in the morning.
Why do we sleep? Well some people have a lot of questions about sleep like… why do have dream? Well I am going to answer those questions. We also discussed the topic about sleeping and the different things we should know about it. the most interesting topic we discussed in my opinion was the sleep and dreaming. Ive always liked this topic because it’s the most interesting to me, mostly because the dreaming aspect of sleeping.
