(Need a hook or something before this but don’t know what) In the novel “The Martian” by Andy Weir the main character Mark Watney’s education and preparation is put to the test. Mark Watney is an astronaut who was sent to Mars on a mission named Ares 3 with five other crew members. After years of preparation they take off for mars and everything goes perfectly until a few sols after landing a huge sandstorm blows through while they were outside of the Hab. During this storm they need to evacuate Mars because their shuttle that is bringing them back to Earth is tilting and if it falls over they will all be stuck on Mars. To avoid the possibility of getting stuck on Mars the six crew members make their way to the shuttle when all of the sudden …show more content…
(Don’t know what to put as transition) “You know what!? Fuck this! Fuck this airlock, fuck that Hab and fuck this whole planet! Seriously, this is it! I’ve had it! I’ve got a few minutes before I run out of air and I’ll be damned if I spend them playing Mars’s little game. I’m so god damn sick of it I could puke” (The Martian 158). Mark is clearly angry with the unpredictable accidents that often occur while he is trying to thrive. Watney is angry with the fact that whenever he has everything planned out something always messes it up and almost kills …show more content…

By reflecting on this moment you can really tell how much he misses his crew and how lonely he truly is. At this point he would do anything to have his crew with him. During this section he uses simple sentences to show the succinct thoughts that run through his head. Being stranded on mars he has not felt any affection because there is no one there to give it to him. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a woman. Just sayin’. Anyway, to ensure I don’t crash again, I’ll- Seriously…no women in like, years” (The Martian 319). Watney can’t even stay focused on his work because he wants affection from someone. However, this love is not possible because he is stranded. Weirs use of sentence structure in this excerpt really exaggerates his thoughts of the woman and shows how strained he is from being
