All eleven of the crew men started to drown as the plane was sinking deeper and deeper into the ocean. Louie, being tangled up in ropes went unconscious. Could this be the end for Louie? Louie Zamperini as a young boy was a rebel. Cops chased Louie all around town but never could catch him because of his speed. Firstly, in the book it says, “For several days, Louie staked out the Quack’s office, watching him and the guards….Louie’s only chance… Louie… snatched the newspaper...crawled out, and walked to Harris’s cell” (169). This quotes indicates to the reader that Louie took a risk to help him and others escape as he had some conviction left. This proved how brave or courageous Louie was. Louie knew if he got caught, he would enter a world of pain as the Japanese would beat him nearly to death. He didn’t care, the risk was worth it. Another example of his bravery is towards the middle of the book where it says, “Louie stole supplies-- a knife, rice, string, and loose paper to serve as toilet paper” (168). The reader would probably think that Louie was just trying to get revenge on the Japanese, but Louie was trying to stay alive and stealing things helps him through the time he was a captive. Finally, in Chapter 33 it stated, “A minute later, Louie bounded into the lobby. [Pete] was startled by the sight of [Louie]. Expecting Louie to be emancipated” (238). It has been two and a half long, torturous years since Louie had seen Pete. Louie was being so gallant for just strolling into the lobby not knowing how his brother was going to react. Even though Louie was tortured, loss most of his dignity, and has no one that knows he’s still alive, he always refused to be invisible by causing extraordinary events.
