A Shy Kid
Have you ever had a best friend? Or have you ever had a crush on someone? Or maybe, have you lost a loved one? Junior has, he was a kid who got bullied by other indians on the reservation. He said he had brain damage, which made him him stand out from the other indians. His teacher (Mr.P) told him he should leave his family, his best friend, and his school to start a new life to go to an all white school. Junior makes new friends at his new school, and has a semi-girlfriend. He also makes the varsity basketball team as a freshman! As Junior develops friendships, pursues a love interest, and experiences difficult times, he demonstrates his desire to work hard which shows how ambition drives self esteem. Friendship means a lot to kids in Junior’s age, but it was hard for him to make friends because of his brain damage, “Honestly, Oscar was a better person than any human I had ever known” (9). This quote explains love because Junior is saying how he always gets the really good girls, and he doesn’t understand why. An additional quote for love is, “How is it that a bulimic girl with vomit on her breath can suddenly be so sexy? Love and lust can make you go crazy” (109). This shows love because even though her breath smells bad, and has a disorder, Junior doesn’t care about the bad things of penelope. He overlooks that, and realized of all of the good stuff about her. Lastly, Junior says in a quote, “And, okay, so she was only semi- dating me. We held hands once in awhile, and we kissed once or twice , but that was it. I don’t know what I meant to her.” This last quote shows love because he doesn’t know how she feels about him, and he doesn’t know in the book what’s going to happen
