Chris McCandless was in search of his true and ideal self. Although he had a lot of critics, he also had a lot of admirers. No matter what other people thought about Chris, he did not let it persuade him to change his outlook in life. Even though he died at an early age in search of whatever he wants to find, there is a lesson to be learned and it should be taught. That puts an emphasis on his opinion that McCandless really dared to differ. Due to our own reasoning, we often judge too soon, and think negative of those who tried to different. We often assume that they might actually be crazy and need some mental help. It’s not true all the time though. Krakauer added, “He wasn’t a nutcase, he wasn’t a sociopath, he wasn’t an outcast,” (85). That being said, Krakauer does not really think that McCandless is just some crazy boy trying to gain attention because of a mental disability or something. He is satisfied the life that he lived and there is no trace of regret. “Starvation is not a pleasant way to die” (Chris McCandless qtd in Krakauer 198). His optimism showed even through his dying days. Krakauer wrote, “One of his last acts was to take a picture of himself, standing note toward the camera lens, the other raised in a brave, beatific farewell… He is smiling in the picture” (Chris McCandless qtd in Krakauer 199). The satisfaction was evident in his facial expressions and certain journal entries. He might have originally planned to go home after his adventure, but it is unfortunate he did not make it back. Even though his journey had a quite sad ending, it is pleasant to know his story. He believed, and he accomplished his ultimate goal, and that is to find his true self and give himself his own
