“...Philosopher, scientist, poet, swordsman, musician, aerial traveler, maker of sharp retorts and lover (not to his advantage!), here lies Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac, who was everything, and who was nothing.” Cyrano, a Gascon cadet, a talented, bold, well-respected and mischievous man who does everything without regrets. In Edmond Rostand's Cyrano De Bergerac, Rostand reveals Cyrano as a courageous and humble person because he shows intelligence, bravery, and loyalty throughout the play. Throughout the play Cyrano shows intelligence. In Act I, Scene IV, Valvert insults Cyrano’s nose. Cyrano responds back with twenty different better ways Valvert could’ve insulted his nose. This shows that Cyrano thinks quickly and cleverly. Also in Act I, Scene IV Cyrano creates a ballade off the top of his head while fencing with Valvert. It takes some time to create a poem such as a ballade, and for him to compose one that quick while fencing shows that he is genuinely intelligent. Not only does Cyrano display intelligence, but he also proves that he has courage. In Act I, Scene VII, Lignière informs Cyrano that a hundred men are going to attack him on his way home Cyrano pstops what he is doing and he fights the men so Lignière can sleep at home without disturbance. In Act IV, Scene X, Christian wants Cyrano to profess his love to Roxanne so she could choose between him or Cyrano. While Christian was walking off so Cyrano could talk to Roxanne he was shot and wounded very badly. Notwithstanding, Cyrano held in his confession and told Christian that he is the one that Roxanne loves so he could die happily. Lots of times when people form a truce with someone they can never keep their promise, but Cyrano instead sticks to his word. This shows Cyrano is trustworthy because he told Christian as he is dying that Roxane still chooses
