Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close September 11, 2001 is remembered as one of the most tragic days in American history. Yet in the days after, people all united together to support each other. In Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer, Oskar, a nine year old boy, thinks of a solution that is a little unique through his imagination - a birdseed shirt for the people who leaped from the towers, falling to their deaths, to escape the incinerating heat of the flames. Throughout this novel, just like the example above, characters use their imaginations, art, and creativity to express their inner selves and heal their emotional wound from the world. As she reminisces about her marriage, her perspective on their complications differs from that of her husband. These differences allow the readers to sympathize with both grandparents, and understand their individual point of views. When Thomas left her for the second time, she "poured the fish down the drain"(185) and "released the insects onto the street" (185) acting in revenge by damaging things that were precious to Thomas. Her words describing her actions were more powerful than explicitly stating what her emotion was at that point. It also contains a clear message to his grandson - Everything around you won’t last forever, so live each day as your last - which she learned from personal experience. She thought “it was never unnecessary “(314) to think that moment is the right time to say how much she loves her sister, because “there would be other nights.”(314) However, her last night with her sister was just like “any other night”(313), which is her creative way to tell Oskar (who always buries his feelings in himself) that it is crucial to reveal your feelings to other people at that moment to not regret it later. Moreover, she uses her experiences in the letter which ties to Oskar's experience that both of them lost their loved ones without any preparation so that Oskar could really make the connection to her
